Movie Review-Disco Pigs

Rating-R
Director-Kristen Sheridan
Actors-Elaine Cassidy, Cillian Murphy
Genre-Drama
Year-2001

“Disco Pigs” is a great movie with fantastic performances. Based on the play by Enda Walsh, it is about two Irish teenagers who have been best friends since childhood. They have their own secret language and call each other by their childhood nicknames, Pig (Cillian Murphy) and Runt (Elaine Cassidy). However, Pig has fallen in love with Runt, who doesn’t feel the same way. When Runt’s parents send her to a trade school away from their town, Pig, who has become increasingly unbalanced being away from Runt, goes on a journey to find her. One thing that makes this movie unique is the dialogue. The main characters talk in a combination of Irish slang and their own made-up language. It was a bit hard to get into at first because of that, but I was interested in the characters and the story, and I got used to the dialogue after a while. The dialogue is very interesting and sometimes unexpectedly poetic. The acting by Cillian Murphy and Elaine Cassidy are wonderful. I was especially impressed by Cillian Murphy’s performance. “Disco Pigs” is available to watch on YouTube (the link to Part One is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5spNUFlT7U&feature=plcp, and the rest of the movie is available on the YouTube channel “CatorsCinema”) and I really recommend it.
